Do

The North Tamar region has long been a favourite among travellers, yet many are unaware of the hidden gems waiting just beyond the well-trodden path. Wild Tamar opens the door to unique, off-the-beaten-track adventures ideal for business event delegates and organisers alike.

Water Sports – Explore the serene waterways and dynamic coastlines of the George Town area. River and ocean kayaking are popular options, with calm coves and rocky headlands perfect for paddlers. In summer, York Cove, Town Beach, and East Beach offer ideal conditions for stand-up paddleboarding. On windier days, thrill-seekers can enjoy kite and windsurfing at Low Head and other exposed stretches.

Mountain Biking – Tasmania is renowned as a mountain biking mecca, and the George Town Mountain Bike Trails complete the North East trail network. Just 40 minutes from Launceston and crafted by World Trail (creators of Blue Derby and St Helens), these trails offer world-class riding experiences for all skill levels—making George Town the perfect launchpad for your biking adventure.

Wildlife – Low head is already famous for its penguin colony, and Seahorse World and Platypus House are already tourist favourites. But did you know that Tenth Island, just of the shore of Beechford, is home to one of the largest (and few permanent) seal colonies in Australia.

Fishing – Bream, flathead, snapper, trevally, sharks, rays, salmon, whiting, wrasse, barracouta, elephant fish, mackerel, mullet, garfish, King George whiting, longfin pike, snapper and gummy shark – they’re all nearby and just waiting to be caught. Night time offers prime squid jigging around the beacon lights, and Curries River dam is stocked with the elusive trout (both brown and rainbow) sure to test the patience of any angler.

Low Head is already known for its adorable penguin colony, while nearby attractions like Seahorse World and Platypus House are firm visitor favourites. Venture a little further and discover Tenth Island, off the coast of Beechford—home to one of Australia’s largest and only permanent seal colonies.

Diving – Low head is Tasmania latest sky diving destination offering a unique birds-eye view of the river mouth and historic Low Head area. Height not your thing? Just below surface of the Tamar River / kanamaluka you’ll find shipwrecks, reefs, kelp forests and sponge gardens.
