Visionary Stories: Catriona Hurd Professor in Seaweed Physiology and Ecology

Recently we launched a new series of Visionary Stories highlighting some of the pioneers who call Tasmania home. This week we introduce you to Professor in Seaweed Physiology and Ecology, Catriona Hurd.

With climate change resulting in Tasmania losing 95% of its giant kelp population, Catriona and her colleagues at the university of Tasmania are working to combat this with ongoing restoration projects and introducing thermally tolerant species.

Catriona has been a vital part of growing this field in the state, not only though the work she does but also through her contribution to attracting conferences to the island. In 2023, Catriona was a key speaker and co-chair at the International Seaweed Symposium held in Hobart. An event that saw 500 seaweed scientists and industry experts from around the world coming to discuss the impact climate change is having on seaweed and finding solutions. It was the first time in 75 years the event had taken place in Australia
