Just a two-minute drive or a leisurely 15-minute walk from the heart of Launceston lies Cataract Gorge Reserve—affectionately known as The Gorge by locals. This striking natural formation offers a tranquil escape right on the city’s doorstep.
For a truly unforgettable experience, take a ride on the iconic Gorge Scenic Chairlift. Gliding peacefully above the gorge, the chairlift provides sweeping aerial views of this ancient landscape—estimated to be over 140 million years old. Nowhere else in the world can you soar above a gorge of this age so close to a city centre.
With its gentle pace, the chairlift allows plenty of time to soak in the breathtaking scenery and capture stunning photographs. It’s a moment of serenity that feels a world away from the everyday.

With a total span of 457m, the Gorge Scenic Chairlift boasts the longest single span of any chairlift in the world (308m). The main drive station is located at Basin Road, West Launceston, near the main carpark and entrance, with the other station in the middle of the Cliff Grounds reserve.
Your journey takes you over the huge naturally formed basin, filled by the waters of the South Esk River, at times surging through the Cataract Gorge. As you glide above this ancient landscape, you’ll be treated to sweeping views of the eastern and western sides of the reserve, framed by majestic dolerite cliffs.
These very cliffs inspired explorer William Collins of the Lady Nelson to describe the area as “a scene of natural beauty, probably not surpassed in the world.”
Each chair has two seats and moves at a slow, leisurely pace, allowing plenty of time to take in the views and capture stunning photos. The chairlift is a family-friendly experience that is accessible and inclusive—wheelchair users are welcome, and the friendly team is always on hand to assist, going above and beyond to help create unforgettable memories.
