Meet our board: Tom McDevitt
In this limited series we will be introducing you to our incredible board. Comprising of individuals from various professional backgrounds they each bring their own experience and personal qualities to help us drive long lasting benefits for Tasmania. First up we have Tom McDevitt.
Founder of TM Management Group – a specialist Tasmanian venue & event management company – Tom has developed extensive experiences and networks in the event, tourism & hospitality industries.
He has held successful role as the Sales & Operations Manager of the Princes Wharf 1 venue, building strong relationships with many clients, fostering beneficial partnerships.
We recently got together with Tom to ask him about his thoughts on what the future holds for business events in Tasmania and what he hopes to bring to the industry in order to see it prosper.
What do you believe you bring to the BET Board?
As the manager of one of Tasmania’s preeminent large scale business event venues I bring a strong understanding of the business events sector and a strategic commercial skill set to the BET Board.
However, as a proud Tasmanian, I bring a deep desire to see our island thrive, a passion for showcasing the very best our island has to offer business events delegates, and a hunger for Tasmania to be known as a world class business events destination.
Why Business Events Tasmania?
Business Events Tasmania is a vital organisation in Tasmania’s tourism industry.
Business Events Tasmania not only works to promote our island as a business events destination and secure strategically aligned business events to our state; but bridge the gap between the business events sector, wider tourism industry, government, and our strategic sectors, to highlight the value of business events for the entire Tasmanian community.
What do you love about Tassie?
There is a LOT to love about Tassie! There are all the obvious attributes that automatically spring to mind – delicious fresh produce, amazing epicurean delights, wide open spaces and immersive nature-based experiences in every direction you turn. However, if I had to narrow it down to just one thing, I would say it is the people of Tassie that I love the most.
We are a connected, tight-knit small island community who support each other and look out for each other. We are immensely proud of our island state and the many ways we have found to thrive down here.
For our business events delegates this translates to the opportunity to enjoy a change of pace and gain new perspectives in the best place in the world.
What do you believe is in the future for BE in Tasmania?
The launch of Business Events Tasmania’s ‘See Clear Here’ destination marketing campaign in 2021 has really laid out the blueprint for the future of business events in Tasmania.
By focusing on the delegate experience and inviting people to our island state to take a different look at the world, we are paving the way for business events that are meaningful, sustainable, and provide our delegates with genuine connection to place, whilst also benefiting our local communities hosting them.
Complementing this is the work Business Events Tasmania is doing to connect Tasmania’s key industries with the business events sector, particularly through our Visionary Program.
This holistic future focussed approach is leading us to a point where every major industry in the state understands and reaps the economic and social benefits of business events, and as we continue to deliver exceptional business events for our clients, Tasmania gains a world class reputation as a place to gather, learn and share ideas.
Why should professionals from your industries be interested in business events?
Working in Tasmania’s business events sector I see firsthand the immense benefits business events deliver for our local community.
Business events delegates to Tasmania are the highest yielding traveller of our visitor economy, typically extending their stay with pre and post conference touring, bringing family and friends along on the journey, and 20% of all business delegates take the opportunity to explore our regions.
Additionally, much of Tasmania’s business events activity takes place across our winter and shoulder seasons, supporting our tourism industry through the quieter months.
Every pocket of the tourism and hospitality sector stands to benefit from working on business events, from venue operators and hotels, to AV providers, photographers, cafes and restaurants, and tour and transport operators.
Social and economic benefits aside, the satisfaction of working as part of a team of providers on a conference or corporate incentive to deliver the client’s vision of a one-of-a-kind Tasmanian experience for their delegates, and making that vision come to life, is an exceptionally rewarding experience.
