Meet Our Board: Matthew Cocker
Comprising of individuals from various professional backgrounds, each member of our board brings their own experience and personal qualities to help us drive long lasting benefits for Tasmania. In this limited series we introduce you to them. For this week we have Matthew Cocker taking center stage.
Joining Hobart Airport 9 years ago, Matt is the Chief Operating Officer at Hobart International Airport, formerly holding roles at Darwin International Airport, Adelaide Airport and Qantas. This extensive experience gained from working in the highly regulated aviation industry means that Matt is equipped with valuable capability in understanding and navigating policy and regulatory environments.
Alongside this, his roles on both the Tourism Industry Council of Tasmania and the Australian Airports Association Boards bring further knowledge regarding issues that assist in building the strategic picture for the business events industry.
We asked Matt a few questions to get his insight in the strengths Tasmania possess and what motivated him to become part of the BET Board.
Having worked in the aviation industry in Darwin and Adelaide, have you noticed any differences working in Tasmania? Are there any challenges or strengths unique to the island?
I love working in Tasmania. It makes me really proud to work at our home’s ‘front door’; welcoming 65% of all people coming into our state.
You can get things done here. If you don’t know who to call about a certain matter, you know someone who does. And everyone is willing to ‘lean in’ and help to get things done. This is important. The tyranny of distance that could have the potential to make things difficult disappears with attitudes like that.
What motivated you to become part of the BET Board?
Proud Tasmanian, who likes to promote what Tassie has to offer. Business activity is important – and I am very keen to promote Tasmania as a place in which ideas can become reality.
What do you love about Tasmania?
Absolutely everything! Its stunning natural beauty, its pristine coastline, its magnificent pristine wilderness, its food and beverage offerings, its ease of access and most importantly its people. You can drive for 20 minutes from the heart of the city and be in awe of the scenery in front of you, while tasting great food being served by wonderfully accommodating people.
